Background: Athlete’s Village Housing Co‐op Lobby Mural Project 2016
(this is what we originally did!)
In many co-­ops, members have gathered to create murals. As the years
pass, the murals have become dated, but difficult to remove as
residents remain sentimental about their contributions. At our co-­op
we have a splendid site for a mural ­- the two ­story wall in our
lobby. But we want to avoid getting caught with a mural we’ll have to
live with for the next 50 years! So instead, we are creating a
removable, reconfigurable piece of art, that can be easily updated as
our co-­op membership changes.

Each unit will be allocated a small canvas. At a series of events, you
will have the opportunity to paint your canvas in any style you wish,
from realistic pictures, to smears or splatters. Once the canvases are
completed, they will be assembled and attached to the wall using 3m
Velcro hooks. We will provide paint our chosen colour palette, so the
canvases will fit together, regardless of how they are painted. The
canvases will form an appealing tiled mural and represent both the
wonderful individuality of our members as well as the common ground of
our co-­op community. The canvases will be easy to detach and
reattach, so if you move out, you can choose to take your canvas with
you. If we decide to change the look of the lobby after some time, it
will be easy to return the wall to its original state, and return each
canvas to its home unit.
